Royce Gracie hoping to return to the Octagon at UFC Brazil

Royce Gracie may be making a return to the UFC Brazil at the age of 44. Dana White at a press conference in Rio de Janeiro this past week announced the UFC’s return to Brazil in August of 2011, after a thirteen year absence. Royce Gracie, alongside Dana White as a guest was quickly asked ” will you be fighting in Rio? ” Smiling the veteran replied:

” I’m still thinking (on fighting in Rio). But I’m always training. This return of UFC to Brazil touched me, made me feel the wish of coming back to the Octagon. Everything has been negotiated with Dana White. Let’s wait and see. ”

Royce Gracie’s last UFC fight was a TKO loss to Matt Hughes in may of 2006. This was the only time Gracie has been finished inside the ring for his entire career ( 2 other losses came by way of corner stoppages ). Gracie has a overall record of 14-3-3 with twelve of his wins coming by tap-out.

WEC 53 Saves the best to last. Recap and comments

In the last show ever for the WEC the card was definitely filled with excitement. Anthony Pettis bettered former champ Ben Henderson in a wild 5 round back and forth war. In the end the edge went to Pettis by unanimous decision with 48-47, 48-47- and 49-46 scores. The win places Pettis next in line for the UFC Lightweight Title facing the winner of January’s UFC 125 fight between Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard.

Also on the card co-headlining the main event was Champ Dominick Cruz facing the always tough Scott Jorgenson. Cruz’s quick footwork and fast in and out punches seemed too much for Jorgenson to handle with all three judges scoring the bout 50-45 for Cruz.

Anthony Pettis def. champ Ben Henderson via (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) via unanimous decision

Carlos Condit Comments on Fitch No Go

Carlos Condit spoke to MMA Junkie about the decision to not face Jon Fitch in the upcoming battle, UFC 126, scheduled in Feb. When he was asked to comment on the newly scheduled fight where Fitch will face off against Jake Ellenberger, Condit stated:

“I imagine it will go like Fitch’s fights go, usually,” he said. “Ellenberger has a lot of power, and I don’t think Fitch is going to risk standing up with him for very long. So I imagine that he’s probably going to take [Ellenberger] down and outgrapple him. Fitch is a great fighter. I’m not taking anything away from him. I’m a fan. I just think he’s not really a finisher, and that’s his thing. But he’s one of the best fighters in the division either way.

“But, like I said, Ellenberger has a hell of a lot of power, and I think he could definitely take Fitch out because he’s dangerous.”

He later commented to Junkie a little about the business side of MMA, categorizing his decision not to fight Fitch by saying:

“At a certain point in your career, you have to start being smart about picking your fights,” Condit said. “There’s a lot of guys that are tough as hell and very dangerous but don’t have a huge name. So losing to them wouldn’t do anything for you, and neither would beating them.”

He has been taking some real grief on his twitter, so check that out on the Carlos Condit profile page. Check out the full story at MMAJunkie.com.

Efrain Escudero Signs with Shine Fights

Shine Fight Promotions (Shine Fights) today announced that they have signed UFC veteran lightweight Efrain Escudero to a multi-fight contract. The Mexican lightweight is best known as the winner of Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter season eight. Training under recent Shine Fights Lightweight Grand Prix victor Drew Fickett, Escudero has carved out a reputation for himself as an exciting fighter that always lays it all on the line for the entertainment of fight fans.

“I’m very excited to have Efrain sign on with us,” stated Shine Fights COO Jason Chambers. “I have tremendous confidence in his abilities, and look forward to seeing him make waves in our growing lightweight division.”

A former All American wrestler, the 5’9”, 155-pound Escudero holds a 13-2 record overall, which includes a 3-2 mark in the UFC. The submission specialist began his career in respected regional promotion Rage in the Cage in 2006. In his first ten fights, Escudero went undefeated, with nine of his wins coming via submission. From there, he was chosen to join the cast of The Ultimate Fighter season eight, where he continued his undefeated streak. He faced and beat Ido Pariente to earn his spot in the TUF house. Escudero followed that up with submission victories over Shane Nelson and Junie Browning to garner a spot in the finals. There, he conquered Phillipe Nover by decision to become that season’s winner.

During the course of his career, Escudero has defeated Cole Miller and Dan Lauzon, in addition to Nover. He has also faced Evan Dunham and Charles Oliveira. Despite his winning record in the Octagon, Escudero was recently faced with the adversity of being cut from the UFC roster. Now, he’ll look to right his ship within the confines of Shine Fights.

“Going to Shine is the first step to becoming a world champion. As far as my career goes, things happen, and I don’t live in the past. I’m excited to get this show in the road…Shine, here I come!”

No date has been finalized for Escudero’s Shine Fights debut, but an announcement is expected shortly.

Lesnar Walking at 265 and Ready to Fight

Lesnar Walking at 265 and Ready to Fight

UFC 121 is just a few days away, but Lesnar has been reported to be walking around at weigh-in weight for a week now. An MMA blogger reports:

Brock Lesnar is reportedly at 265 as we speak so there will be no cutting weight for the UFC Heavyweight Champion for next Saturday’s eagerly anticipated title defense against undefeated Cain Velásquez. I see this as good for Lesnar fans because already being at the required fighting weight will prevent Brock from having to tweak his diet or training regime prior to the fight in Anaheim.

Even though Lesnar will fight lighter than he originally fought in UFC, the former WWE Champion, NCAA All American and National Champion is still beastly strong which could be an key factor in his next encounter in the Octagon. Point is that Lesnar has lost no strength with his lesser weight plus Brock’s cardio, one would assume, will be enhanced by not having to carry so much mass in what is expected to be an extremely competitive fight.

If Velásquez’s camp thinks that Lesnar is going to ‘gas’ after a round or two then they need to re-evaluate their strategy because that isn’t happening.

We look forward to this next challenge for Lesnar equally as much as we are for Velasquez. Both are top notch fighters that are maintaining the abolsute excitement in the heavyweight division. Sit back and enjoy the PPV as these two make a fight of it!

The Ultimate Fighter 12: Team GSP vs Team Koscheck

As we enter into the next season of TUF, it is obvious that this year’s group of fighters are strong willed and eager to be the next Ultimate Fighter. We look forward to seeing the fighters grow under the expert training of two of the greatest fighters in the sport in Georges St-Pierre and Josh Koscheck.

This year I don’t think we are going to recap each weeks’ episode, but will surely highlight throughout the site any major events of interest. So far the fights have been excellent as the caliber of fighters are top notch. This season brings TUF Season 1 semi-finalist Josh Koscheck who lost a split decision fight to the ultimate winner in Diego Sanchez. He is back and matched up against future opponent Georges St-Pierre who is arguably the best fighter in MMA today.

Season 12 awaits so enjoy and continue to check back to our site for statistics on these and all MMA fights!
