Early life

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, his family immigrated to the United States in 1983, settling in Garland, Texas. He began his martial arts training at the age of 17 and mixed martial arts at 21.[1]

Mixed martial arts career

World Extreme Cagefighting

Njokuani made his WEC debut at WEC 38, losing to Ben Henderson via second round submission.

He later defeated IFL veteran Bart Palaszewski at WEC 40 and Muhsin Corbbrey at WEC 43, both via second round TKO.[2]

Njokuani fought IFL veteran Chris Horodecki, who made his WEC debut on December 19, 2009 at WEC 45.[3] Njokuani won via first round TKO, earning the Knockout of the Night award for the third consecutive time in the WEC.[4]

Njokuani faced Shane Roller at WEC 48 on April 24, 2010.[5] He lost the fight via first round rear naked choke submission.[6]

He was defeated by Polish WEC newcomer Maciej Jewtuszko via first round TKO at WEC 50.

Njokuani defeated WEC newcomer Edward Faaloloto via second round TKO on November 11, 2010 at WEC 52.[7]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

In October 2010, World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. As part of the merger, all WEC fighters were transferred to the UFC.[8]

In his UFC debut, Njokuani faced touted prospect Edson Barboza on March 19, 2011 at UFC 128.[9] He lost the fight via unanimous decision, but the bout won the Fight of the Night bonus.

Njokuani fought Andre Winner on July 2, 2011 at UFC 132, winning via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26).[10] UFC commentator, Joe Rogan, called it Njokuani’s best performance of his career. With this performance, Njokuani became the sixth fighter to land over 100 significant strikes in a single bout.[citation needed]

Njokuani was expected to face Paul Taylor on November 5, 2011 at UFC 138.[11] However, just days before the event, Taylor pulled out of the bout citing an injury. With no time to find a suitable replacement the bout was scrapped.[12]

Njokuani was expected to face Ramsey Nijem on December 30, 2011 at UFC 141.[13] However, Nijem was forced out the bout with an injury and replaced by Danny Castillo.[14] He lost the fight via split decision.

Njokuani beat John Makdessi on April 21, 2012 at UFC 145[15] by unanimous decision after three rounds.

Njokuani is expected to face Paul Taylor on July 11, 2012 at UFC on Fuel TV 4.[16] However, Taylor was forced out of the bout with yet another injury and replaced by Rafael dos Anjos.[17]
