James Edson Berto (born July 5, 1983) is a Haitian professional mixed martial artist and the former Real Fighting Championship Lightweight Champion who has fought for the EliteXC and Strikeforce promotions and is known for his incredible leg lock variations, all but one of his submission wins are by way of Heel Hook.

Background

Berto comes from a family of athletes and is not the only member of his family to appear on major fight cards on cable and pay-per-view, his brother Andre Berto is a professional boxer who from June 2008 to April 2011 was WBC Welterweight world champion and is considered one of boxings top fighters in the division, and his sister Nana Berto is an undefeated female mixed martial arts contender for Real Fighting Championship.[2] Edson is trained by his father, Dieseul Berto, who appeared in UFC 10 and competed in mixed martial arts in Japan.[3]

MMA career

Berto made his professional MMA debut February 2004. He quickly amassed a record of 10 wins and 3 losses in MMA bouts primarily in Mississippi and Florida before debuting for EliteXC.

Berto debuted for EliteXC on their debut show in February 2007. His career was up and down in the promotion, with a record of 3 wins and 3 losses. Berto also fought on the last EliteXC show in October 2008.

More recently, Berto defeated Edson Diniz at Real Fighting Championships 16: Nations Collide, February 27, 2009 via decision[4] and fought Jason Ball in a series of matches for the promotion.

After over a year away from the sport, Berto returned to fight Luis Palomino in October 2011. He lost the fight via unanimous decision.
