Rolles Gracie Jr. (born July 14, 1978) is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner.[4] He is a 3rd degree black belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and the son of one of the pioneers of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Rolls Gracie.[5]

MMA career
Gracie stepped into the International Fight League for his first MMA fight on the undercard of the IFL World Team Championships in 2007. He joined his cousin Renzo Gracie‘s New York Pitbulls in the IFL. Gracie’s younger brothers Igor and Gregor are also mixed martial artists. Gracie was set to fight Ricardo Romero at Ring of Combat 24, April 17, 2009, but he withdrew from the fight a week before due to an injury sustained in practice.[6]
Gracie signed with Art of War Fighting Championship and made his debut on May 23, 2009, where he defeated Russian Judo expert Baga Agaev at 5:09 seconds in Round 1.[1] Rolles, in his second fight for the Art of War FC promotion, defeated K-1 kickboxing veteran, but at the time 0–2 in MMA, Peter Graham early in the first round.[7]
Gracie is also known for awarding Rashad Evans with, what he calls a black belt in NO-Gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu, something that caused quite a lot of controversy, to which he responded, “To be honest, when I heard all the controversy over this I was surprised. As for Rashad and his abilities I can say this: Today the IBJJF has created the No-Gi Jiu Jitsu tournaments. If Rashad were to compete in these tournaments, he would compete at the Black Belt level, without question. He is a Black Belt in No-Gi JJ. I’ve spent the last year training with Rashad. He’s trained with me at Renzo Gracie’s in New York, we’ve trained at Jackson’s in New Mexico, in Denver, maybe some of you saw me on some episodes of TUF Heavyweights this season. I was out training with Rashad and working with the guys on their jiu-jitsu skills. I don’t really feel that I owe this explanation to anyone. Rashad is a talented athlete and a world-class wrestler and the transition from wrestling to jiu-jitsu was natural for him. I can only speak about my training with him, but of course his jiu-jitsu training began long before our work together.”[8]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Gracie was expected to make his UFC debut on February 6, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada against Mostapha Al Turk [9] Due to Mostapha Al Turk having visa troubles, Gracie instead faced Joey Beltran in his UFC debut. Gracie managed to take down Beltran early via the clinch. Gracie immediately got to the mount and attempted a rear-naked choke. Beltran was able to free himself and eventually reverse his way out of the mount. Gracie was exhausted after three minutes, and he gasped for air during several takedown attempts in the second round. On his third try, he lay on the mat and Beltran went to work. Beltran landed 15 shots as Gracie turtled, causing referee Herb Dean to stop the fight at 1:31 of the second round.[10]
Following the defeat, Renzo Gracie described Rolles’ performance as “embarrassing”[11] and Gracie was quickly released from the promotion after just one fight.[12]
Post-UFC
Gracie was to face Mike Ciesnolevicz at a Shine Fights event on January 8, 2011.[13] The event, however, did not materialize.
Instead, Gracie made his first post-UFC appearance on April 22, 2011 at UCC 4: Supremacy. He defeated Braden Bice via submission in the first round.
ONE Fighting Championship
On December 8, 2011 it was announced that Gracie had signed for Asian promotion ONE Fighting Championship.[14]
He made his debut at ONE Fighting Championship: Battle of Heroes in Jakarta, Indonesia on February 11, 2012 where he took on Bob Sapp.[15] Gracie won the fight in the first round by submission due to strikes.
Personal
Gracie is married and lives in New Jersey where he is the main instructor at his cousin Renzo Gracie’s jiu-jitsu school in Holmdel, New Jersey.[16] He has a son named Hollis with his wife Beth,[17] and a daughter named Kyara from a previous relationship.[18][19]
Gracie is the eldest son of the legendary Rolls Gracie, and grandson of Carlos Gracie. He is the older brother of Igor Gracie and half-brother of Gregor Rangel (better known as Gregor Gracie).
