Frank Mir: Bad Strategy, Worse Result

While exiting the Octagon last Saturday after his disappointing performance at UFC 111, Frank Mir knew he made a mistake. No, he didn’t use poor technique or leave an arm exposed that that led to his lopsided loss, his mistake was one in strategy. In Shane Carwin, Mir fought an opponent who was 11-0, but perhaps more importantly, all of Carwin’s fights had ended in the first round. And therein, Mir saw his opportunity – to make Carwin fight beyond his comfort zone and to test him in the second and third rounds. With this in mind, Mir seemed content on letting Carwin push the action early in the first round, even confidently nodding to his corner while eating some leather. Obviously, this turned out to be a big mistake. To Carwin’s credit, he capitalized on this, and, because of that, now holds the “Interim” UFC Heavyweight belt and is slated for a monstrous showdown with Brock Lesnar.

Mir’s strategy was exposed when Shane Carwin employed his own strategy – the same one he’s used so many times before – to work his opponent against the cage and drop some bombs. Like a Tootsie Roll pop, it took exactly 3 licks to get to the center at which point Mir’s legs gave out. More blows followed to a fetal-prone Mir, eerily reminiscent of Mir’s ugly loss to Brock Lesnar, but the damage was already done.

Although we still don’t know if Carwin can survive beyond the first round, we may find out as he’s slated to face Brock Lesnar in the near-future to unify the titles. Lesnar was Octagon-side to witness the brief fight, and started the hype machine early stating in a post-fight interview, “It was a good fight. He’s still wearing a belt that’s a make believe belt. It’s all good. I got the championship belt. That’s the bottom line.”

Frank Mir: Size Does Matter

“I want to get to where I’m cutting 15-20 pounds just to make 265 pounds. That’s going to take some time. But that way I’ll be the same size he is. I may not be quite as strong as he is, but I’ll be strong enough to neutralize his strength, and then it will come down to who is the better technical fighter. He will never be as technical a fighter as I am because he started too late.”

- Frank Mir on his planed approach when potentially meeting Brock Lesnar for a third time in 2010. Although Lesnar has been sidelined recently with diverticulitis and some have even questioned his return to the sport, Mir has been obsessed with climbing the UFC Heavyweight ranks again for a shot at redemption with Lesnar in a future rubber match. A larger-than-ever Mir (264.5 lbs) choked out Cheick Kongo in just 1:12 at last Saturday’s UFC 107 after a ton of pre-fight bad blood.

Frank Mir Wants Anderson Silva?

“I’m extremely interested in the fight. I’ve learned that size helps people win fights… it would be nice to be on the other end of that. With Anderson, obviously he’s a great striker and he is pound-for-pound one of the best fighters in the world, but with my grappling, it would be a very bad night for him. I think there’s a reason why he should just do a few exhibitions at light heavyweight and stay a middleweight.”

- The UFC’s Frank Mir on his thoughts of a fight with Anderson Silva at heavyweight. Mir came to the realization that size does matter after being brutalized by Brock Lesnar at UFC 100, and is now working on becoming a bigger, stronger fighter.
