Frank Mir: Bad Strategy, Worse Result

While exiting the Octagon last Saturday after his disappointing performance at UFC 111, Frank Mir knew he made a mistake. No, he didn’t use poor technique or leave an arm exposed that that led to his lopsided loss, his mistake was one in strategy. In Shane Carwin, Mir fought an opponent who was 11-0, but perhaps more importantly, all of Carwin’s fights had ended in the first round. And therein, Mir saw his opportunity – to make Carwin fight beyond his comfort zone and to test him in the second and third rounds. With this in mind, Mir seemed content on letting Carwin push the action early in the first round, even confidently nodding to his corner while eating some leather. Obviously, this turned out to be a big mistake. To Carwin’s credit, he capitalized on this, and, because of that, now holds the “Interim” UFC Heavyweight belt and is slated for a monstrous showdown with Brock Lesnar.
Mir’s strategy was exposed when Shane Carwin employed his own strategy – the same one he’s used so many times before – to work his opponent against the cage and drop some bombs. Like a Tootsie Roll pop, it took exactly 3 licks to get to the center at which point Mir’s legs gave out. More blows followed to a fetal-prone Mir, eerily reminiscent of Mir’s ugly loss to Brock Lesnar, but the damage was already done.
Although we still don’t know if Carwin can survive beyond the first round, we may find out as he’s slated to face Brock Lesnar in the near-future to unify the titles. Lesnar was Octagon-side to witness the brief fight, and started the hype machine early stating in a post-fight interview, “It was a good fight. He’s still wearing a belt that’s a make believe belt. It’s all good. I got the championship belt. That’s the bottom line.”

At what point is MMA considered mainstream? How about if you can watch live UFC events at your local movie theatre? Well we all know it is as popular as ever, but is only geared to get even bigger. On March 27th for UFC 111, 300+ theatres are going to be bringing MMA that much closer in full HD.
With an event that will surely be remembered, UFC 111 hosts main card events with Georges St-Pierre versus Dan Hardy and Frank Mir versus Shane Carwin. Along with other great fights and a new way for the public to get closer to the action, UFC 111 will be a monumental event.

Top 5 UFC Upsets of 2009 (well, so far)

Wow, 2009 has flown by. Although it’s not over, for me, it’s been a year of modest accomplishment. I’m still a million dollars shy of being a millionaire and spend more time driving to/from work than actually being at work. However, the UFC has enjoyed significant growth, has more money than ever, and, thankfully, has provided some great fights to soothe my personal agony.
Including “Fight Nights”, 15 UFC events are already in the books this year, with several more on tap. Being that the next event isn’t until October 24 (UFC 104 – Machida vs. Rua), I thought it might be a good time to release the official MMA Full Contact “Top 5 UFC Upsets of 2009 (well, so far)” list. Oddly enough, in 2009, there haven’t been any real shockers like Matt Serra topping Georges St. Pierre, but, there have been a few results that raised my eyebrows (and drained my wallet). Without further adieu, or ado, or whatever it’s supposed to be, here’s the list in chronological order.
Paulo Thiago vs. Josh Koscheck
Event: UFC 95 – Sanchez vs. Stevenson
Date: 2/21/2009
Method: TKO (Punches)
Round: 1
Time: 3:29
Fight Description: The first upset of the year had relative unknown Paulo Thiago knockout welterweight contender Josh Koscheck at UFC 95 in the “very first round” (in my best Bruce Buffer voice). The heavy handed wrestler was expected to run through Thiago on his way back to another shot at the title against GSP. Although the slight Thiago was undefeated coming into the fight, the consensus was that Kos would catch him standing. As the fight progressed in the opening minute of the fight, it looked very likely that Koscheck would do that. Instead, Thiago stunned a lunging Koscheck with a beautifully timed uppercut. Lights out, my sweet prince.
