Conor McGregor & Floyd Mayweather Start New Beef on Twitter

Having seemingly buried the hatchet with a money-spinning mega fight in August 2017, it appears that the rivalry is set to be reignited by the boxing legend. Mayweather  hit out at the UFC lightweight champion, prompting a response from “The Notorious” which looks set to lead to  new beef

What drove Mayweather to target McGregor is uncertain. There are many who believe that the potential to make another massive amount of money in a rematch bout is tempting the 40-year-old legend to pursue another fight. In order to capture the interest of fans who were left a little underwhelmed by the “Money Fight” in August, due to the hefty price tag, Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor would need to do something special.

What is more likely, however, is that Mayweather’s loyalty to Showtime may have led him to lash out at the Irishman. UFC President Dana White and the promotion’s biggest star, McGregor, recently hit out at the company’s vice president, Stephen Espinoza. White had criticized Espinoza for releasing figures which contradicted his claims of pay-per-view buys in the Mayweather vs. McGregor bout.

“Sounds like he’s upset because we committed the cardinal sin of telling the truth (when we released the accurate total for N. American PPV buys on MayMac). Strange that telling the truth, in a press release vetted by all parties in advance, is something to be “despised” for,” Espinoza wrote.

“When we did the Mayweather fight, I watched and took it all in, I just think all these guys, the guys who are promoting boxing today are bad at it,” White said. “I don’t think they do a good job, and I think I could do better. It sounds arrogant, but it’s the truth. I think I could do a better job than these guys do.

“You know, think about this, and I don’t give a s**t about Showtime’s f**king full-of-s**t press release they put out. It’s the biggest fight ever in combat sports history. The thing did over 6.7 million buys, and if the service didn’t drop, we would have got closer to seven million. It was the biggest event ever. It was the biggest boxing event ever, without a boxer. It was only one boxer involved in the fight.”

Espinoza responded to White’s comments:

“Dana has got a certain style and it’s very successful for him,” Espinoza said (MMAFighting). “The one thing I’ll point out — I don’t want to get too much into a back and forth — but we’re a public company and there are regulations, there are legal requirements. We can’t put out press releases giving fake numbers. We have shareholders. We have millions of shareholders.

“When we put something on it, when we say, ‘Here’s a Showtime Sports press release from Mayweather-Pacquiao or Mayweather-Mayweather,’ that has gone through lawyers and everyone has looked at it. It’s factual.

“When we did the Mayweather fight, I watched and took it all in, I just think all these guys, the guys who are promoting boxing today are bad at it,” White said. “I don’t think they do a good job, and I think I could do better. It sounds arrogant, but it’s the truth. I think I could do a better job than these guys do.”

Espinoza also ‘welcomes’ White’s move into boxing as a promoter:

“As a boxing fan — this is gonna sound strange — I welcome it,” Espinoza said. “Anyone who has ideas, who feels like they can come into the sport and contribute in a positive way, regardless of what those ideas are, sure. I welcome it. Which of us has not sat on the couch and said, ‘I can call a fight better than that, I can call football?’ So from that aspect, if he wants to get involved and maybe he does have ideas that will improve it — maybe his matchmaking, his promoting, his marketing, he can contribute. So from that aspect, I’m happy for him to contribute.”

Mayweather hit out at McGregor, targeting last year’s news of a run in with Irish cartel associates:

“I already f**ked you up in 2017 now they about to f**k you up in 2018. You’re about to start your new year off with a bang,” Mayweather wrote.

McGregor had the last word for now, however:

“I am the cartel,” McGregor responded.
